Session Nine

If you want to fly, you need to break free from the stuff that weighs you down – your defence walls

Session Nine

How can I have a closer relationship with God and remove my self-defence walls?

We have progressed to our ninth session by Bill and Wilma Watson. In this session they’ll seek to answer the question, “How can I have a closer relationship with God?”

We trust you are finding these sessions helpful! Bill and Wilma have been teaching us how to break free from our emotional baggage.

We saw in the previous sessions how to remove the baggage of inner shame, unforgiveness, unhealthy soul ties and iniquities.

In this session Wilma will share possible reasons why we fail to really experience the love of God.

This and the next session is the most exciting and yet the most crucial part of our teaching for, if you don’t know how to receive and give the love of God, you too are unable to truly fulfil your God-given destiny.

I told the story in the earlier sessions of how I experienced the love of God, so let me recap in case you missed it.

I was hungry for more of the presence of God. I completely surrendered to God and in tears declared that whatever the cost, I wanted God to help me love Him more. God’s love and presence filled and flowed over me in waves, the emotion surpassed all human understanding and I didn’t want it to ever end!

I was in love with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit! With tears flowing down my cheeks I burst into song:

Heavenly Father, I appreciate You
I love You, adore You, I bow down before You
Heavenly Father, I appreciate You

Son of God, what a wonder You are
You cleansed my soul from sin, set the Holy Ghost within
Son of God, what a wonder You are

Holy Spirit, what a comfort You are
You lead us, You guide us, You live right inside us

Holy Spirit, what a comfort You are

I could now see everyone through different eyes. Eyes of love! I found from then on leading people to Jesus came easily and naturally.

I have such a passion for those who do not know God’s love, both believers and unbelievers. I long that everyone would experience for themselves His amazing love. To be totally filled with His love! I know from experience that you will never the same again!

How amazing is it that God loves us as much as His loves His only Son! The Apostle Paul, in the book of Ephesians, prayed to God and asked that we would personally experience Christ’s love.

He prayed, that you would:

Know [practically, through personal experience] the love of Christ which far surpasses [mere] knowledge, that you may be filled up [throughout your being] to all the fullness of God [so that you may have the richest experience of God’s presence in your lives, completely filled and flooded with God Himself].
Ephesians 3:19 (Amp)

1. The first is that you see God through the eyes of your earthly father

Listen to Jesus’ prayer in John chapter 17:

I have made Your Name known to them and revealed Your character and Your very Self, and I will continue to make [You] known, that the love which You have bestowed upon Me may be in them [felt in their hearts].

From this verse we discover a key to having the love of God felt in our hearts. That is, to know the nature of God as revealed in His name.
Here are some of the names of God:
These names sound like a dad who loves his children, don’t they? What was your relationship like with your earthly father when you were growing up?

Was your dad affirming? Did he hug you? Did your dad impart to you a sense of self-worth?

If not, maybe your relationship with God has been affected as you see Him through the eyes of your earthly father.

I’m sure many can relate to having a dad who did not embrace them and did not impart to them a sense of self-worth. So what do we do about it?

The way to freedom is to forgive your earthy father

Remember what we have said earlier, the devil is a liar, the father of lies. He uses deception and lies to keep you from enjoying a loving personal relationship with God.

Renounce the lies you have believed about God – how you see Him like your earthly father and then, declare the truth about God’s love and goodness toward you.

To remove your self-defence wall press play for audio and pray aloud with me from the heart or read on praying aloud from the heart.

Father God, I choose to forgive my dad and no longer blame him for not being there emotionally (and physically) for me.
I forgive and release him for being distant, unapproachable and angry, for not protecting (and providing for) me as a child and not imparting to me a sense of self-worth.
Father God, where I have believed the enemy’s lies about You, please forgive me. (Be specific – tell God what lies you are believing about Him – such as: “You are distant and unapproachable”). I renounce them now and replace them with the truth of Your Word, for You are a faithful, good, good Heavenly Father.
We’ve been looking at why many know God’s love intellectually, but haven’t really experienced for themselves the depth of His love.

Let us suggest the second possible reason.

2. You’ve built walls around yourself to protect yourself from being hurt

A quote from Joseph F. Newton, “People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges”.

The wall you have built to protect yourself from being hurt again may stop others from harming you, but the wall also does not allow the Godhead to come close to you.

Have you unconsciously built a wall around yourself to stop yourself from getting hurt again?
If so, does it sometimes make you feel lonely and trapped? Distant from God? You can break free today!

Isaiah 61:1 reads:

He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the broken hearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners.
And Isaiah 49 verse 9 tells us how to release the prisoners – those who feel trapped.
We are to:
Say to the prisoners, ‘Come out in freedom’, and to those in darkness, ‘Come into the light’. (NLT)

Someone pointed out to me that Isaiah 49:9 should have read, “Come out into freedom” instead of “Come out in freedom”. God revealed to me that, “Come out in freedom” is correct for, when we become a child of God, we receive total freedom and deliverance. Our complete deliverance and freedom was already paid for when Jesus died on the cross.

What we are doing is calling the prisoner of fear into the light to enable him/her to see and understand, so that they can take hold of, or lay claim to, what is already theirs in Christ Jesus.

Maybe you are asking: “Having been really hurt, I vowed that I wouldn’t be hurt like that again, so I put boundaries around myself, a self-defence wall, as you call it. So, if I allow God to pull down the walls that I have put around me, what will happen when I get hurt again?”

That’s a great question! You have to feel that it’s safe to let the walls around you come down. Understand that you are never alone. God is always with you to protect you!

The Bible says in Psalm 18:2 (CEV):

You are my mighty rock, my fortress, my protector, the rock where I am safe, my shield, my powerful weapon, and my place of shelter.
If you catch yourself in the future being fearful and unsafe and are tempted to build a new wall, run back into your loving Heavenly Father’s arms for His protection.

Before praying to break down the walls and calling the prisoners forth, you have to deal with fear

Listen to what Ann Voskamp says:

Perhaps the opposite of faith is not doubt. Perhaps the opposite of faith is fear. To lack faith perhaps isn’t as much an intellectual disbelief in the existence of God, as fear and distrust that there is a good God.

God wants you to believe in His goodness and wants to fill you with His perfect love so that every particle of fear will be expelled.
1 John 4:18 tell us:

There is no fear where love exists. Rather, perfect love banishes fear.

God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
2 Timothy 1:7
Let me explain how I proved that verse.

I mentioned earlier that I went to a small country school of 20 students. There was a smart boy and myself in grade one. When I had to stand and read in front of the other students and I made a mistake, they would laugh at me.

I was happy to organise Bill’s seminars behind the scenes, but I never wanted to stand in front of people and talk for fear of rejection.

Bill was overseas and was to arrive in time for a seminar. The night before the seminar he rang to say that he couldn’t make it as the plane had been delayed.

I rang the pastor and told him. He suggested that I take the seminar as 70 people had already registered. I felt God had set me up. The fear of rejection left and His love and power took over.

God’s presence was so real that after the seminar ended nobody moved for ten minutes. I have never seen that before or after.

I proved that day that God’s love dispels fear.

Here are four practical steps you can take when faced with a situation that may cause you to fear

Practical steps that I have proved work!

1. Remind yourself that God is faithful to His Word and you are not alone.

Jesus triumphed over the powers of darkness on the cross; your enemies, including fear, are His enemies.

I will be an enemy to your enemies andwill oppose those who oppose you.
Exodus 23:22 (NIV)

2. We are told in the Bible to stop being worried or anxious

Matthew 6:25 (Amp) says

STOP being worried or anxious (perpetually uneasy, distracted) about your life.

Tell yourself! Talk to yourself! “God is greater than this situation, therefore I refuse to be worried or afraid.”

3. In prayer, let go by handing your concerns and worries over to God

You have to put your life into God’s hands when you are faced with the possibility of being killed.

Bill was scheduled to preach at a district conference in south west Ethiopia and I was to care for the sick.

Bill and I, along with our two small children, flew to a very isolated area – five days trek to a road.

The small plane had just left and wouldn’t be back to pick us up for another four days.

When the local people met us, they were really distraught. They told us that raiders were coming from another area to kill them and plunder their cattle.
We were stranded, with no contact with the outside world, several days trek from a road and facing the possibility of being slaughtered.

The raiders didn’t come while we were there. But it was our test to put 1 Peter chapter 5 into practice:

Cast (or give) all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all our concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].

Note the Bible verse we just read says to hand all your concerns and worries over to God – once and for all.

4. We are to let God change the situation

It has been rightfully said that God can’t alter what we haven’t put on the altar.

Carrying our problems, fears and worries around is like holding your problems in a basket up on your head all day. No wonder, by the end of the day, you are a basket case! And that you are so exhausted and have sore shoulders and back from carrying your burdens.

We are to give all our concerns over to God and not take them back. Leave them with Him! He can do a better job caring for the situation than you could.

Here is a wonderful promise for you from Mark 11:23-24 (ESV):

Whoever (the ‘whoever’ is you) says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. (It will be yours- it’s a certainty!)

Prayer is casting your burdens on the Lord.

This cloud cover reminds us of when we were in Ethiopia. We were on a station seven and a half thousand feet above sea level. In the rainy season often the mountains would be covered in cloud.

An evangelist had arrived in the rain at our station. To dry the pastor one of our workers accidentally had mixed petrol and diesel in the same can and put it on wet wood to start a fire. The fire exploded and the pastor got severely burnt on 80% of his body and in fact died the next morning.

Bill got angry, as he saw this as the work of the devil trying to hinder the 70 evangelists who had come to help share the good news that rainy season. In desperation Bill cried out to God in several languages calling the dead pastor back to life and he started breathing again!

The next day Wilma called on our two way radio for an aeroplane to take the pastor to a mission hospital.

When the plane arrived it circled as it couldn’t land due to low lying clouds.
We prayed, and the cloud lifted, just enough for the plane to land and take off again – with our patient on his way to the hospital!
We have proved time and time again that God is faithful to his Word. He answers prayer!
By the way, we met the pastor six months later and he hardly had a mark on his body. God not only brought him back to life but healed him!

Are you ready to join me in prayer, to remove your self-defence walls?

In the book of Hebrews, we are told that the Word of God is sharper than any two edged sword.

God’s Word when declared, can cut through and destroy your self-defence wall, just like a laser beam in surgery cuts through.

So let’s apply God’s Word to remove your self-defence wall.

Press play for a video where we will demonstrate how God’s Word, as a laser beam, can remove your protective wall and any other obstacle you may have.

The Word of God is powerful isn’t it! Press play for audio and pray aloud with me from your heart or read on praying aloud to remove your self-defence wall.

Heavenly Father, please forgive me for allowing my fear, anxiety and worry to become greater than You.

I acknowledge that I have built my own self-defence walls through fear in order to protect myself from being hurt again. Please forgive me. I’m willing to let the wall go and put my trust completely in You.

I renounce and break the power of secret vows or judgments I have made that have kept me bound. Such as: ‘I must not cry’, ‘I shouldn’t tell anyone’, ‘I’ll not be hurt or trust like that again’.

It is written in Your Word Father, “For this purpose the Son of man was manifest that he might undo the works of the devil.” Therefore, I undo the works of the devil and pull down the self-defence walls that I have built.

It is also written that God is a consuming fire, therefore I declare that these walls, no matter what they are made of, be destroyed and consumed by fire.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for Your presence that covers and protects me. In You, I’m totally safe and secure.

I give you all my concerns and worries and close the door to fear in my life. I command in Jesus’ name for all fear to leave.

Put a guard over my heart, Father. I purpose to renew my mind daily with Your Word, so that I will be positioned to follow my heart with confidence in every situation of life. In Jesus Name I ask it. Amen

That’s the conclusion of this session. In the next session we’ll share two more possible reasons why you struggle to receive God’s love and goodness, so be sure to join us.
