Session Seven

If you want to fly, you need to break free from the stuff that weighs you down – your unhealthy soul ties

Session Seven

How do I break free from a bad relationship?

In this seventh session Bill and Wilma Watson will share how to break free from a bad relationship. In other words, how to remove unhealthy soul ties.

In session three we watched a video on how carrying unnecessary emotional baggage can trip us up.

We saw in the previous sessions that the first piece baggage was that we had to identify and remove was the cloak of shame. The second piece of baggage was unforgiveness.

In this session we’ll look at how to remove the baggage of unforgiveness.

In this session our aim is to help you to remove the third piece of baggage, unhealthy soul ties.

Do you know what a soul tie is?

Soul ties between two people who have had an emotional or spiritual attachment can be healthy or unhealthy.

Soul ties is a modern term. The Bible uses words for soul ties like:
Numbers 30:10
Knit together
Colossians 2:2
1 Corinthians 6:16
One Flesh
Mark 10:8 & 1 Corinthians 6:16
Yoked together
Numbers 25:3 & 2 Corinthians 6:14
To be joined
Mark 10:7
A healthy soul tie

The Bible speaks of a healthy soul tie in Ephesians 5:31 (ASV).

As the Scriptures say, “A man is to leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh.

The Biblical word that describes the bonding of two people sexually is called, “cleave”. The Greek word for “cleave” means to glue, adhere to, or cement your soul to, another person’s soul.

When bricks are loose they are easily knocked down but when they are firmly cemented together, they become a very strong structure.

Unhealthy soul ties

Let’s look at a negative energy operating in an unhealthy soul tie. In first Corinthians 6:16 we read:

Don’t you know that if a man joins himself to a prostitute she becomes a part of him and he becomes a part of her? For God tells us in the Scripture that in his sight the two become one person.

Whenever two people engage in sexual intercourse they are, in effect, creating a “one flesh” reality.

Sex is not merely a physical act for personal gratification. Sex is a holistic experience that engages our mind, body, soul and spirit, and it’s the ultimate expression of intimacy between a man and a woman, making the two one flesh. That’s why sex between two people forms a lasting bond between them whether they know it or not, whether they want it or not.

Sex is never just sex.

Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV).

Have you ever wondered why sexual sins are specified by Paul as being the only sins against the body? Why not, for example, drugs or alcohol?

Intimacy and close bonding between a man and woman is meant to be an illustration of the intimacy that God desires with Christ and His church.

From the Bible verse we read earlier in Ephesians 5:31 regarding the two becoming one flesh, it goes on to say:

This mystery is very great, but I speak concerning [the relation of] Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:32 (Amp).

God wants us to live a holy life.

Listen to what the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:14a. (GWT).

Stop forming inappropriate relationships… we need to cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit and live a holy life in the fear of God.

So what is an inappropriate relationship? Briefly spoken, it is anything that defiles your body, soul or spirit.

Unhealthy soul ties will cause fragmentation of the soul

In the book of James chapter one verse eight, it tells us that a double-minded man or woman is unstable in all his or her ways. Fragmentation of the soul creates double mindedness.

The literal meaning of “double-minded” is “a person with two minds or souls.

If you continue to engage in an unhealthy way, or reconnect with the person again sexually, the unhealthy soul tie will return.

The Bible instructs us in 2 Corinthians 6:14a (GWT) to stop forming inappropriate relationships. Just…

Do not be fooled:
Bad friends will ruin good habits. Come back to your right way of thinking and stop sinning.”

1 Corinthians 15:33-34 (NVC)

This is a warning: In one Timothy chapter 4 verse 2 (TLB) we are warned that our conscience can become so hardened that, when we do wrong, it will not even bother us.

These teachers will tell lies with straight faces and do it so often that their consciences won’t even bother them.

A seared or hardened conscience will make you insensitive to the Holy Spirit and your sense of right and wrong will be dulled. We live in a society today where the enemy has seared people’s consciences.

To be free from the chains that have bound you through sexual sin you have to acknowledge that sex outside marriage, including pornography, is sin.

When a man come to us for prayer to overcome pornography, it wasn’t until he acknowledged it as sin that he could find freedom.

Can an unhealthy soul tie only be formed through sex outside marriage?

Unhealthy soul ties can also be formed when either a man or a woman is a controlling person, and you are the victim or even the one doing the controlling.

Here is a list of possible causes of unhealthy soul ties.
Another lady who was tormented in her mind by a controlling close relative found that, in Jesus’ name, she had to cut the soul tie and forbid the controlling spirit from harassing her several times before she felt totally free. She knew it was broken when she didn’t feel intimidated anymore and was not tormented with thoughts of guilt and condemnation. She now sees her relative through eyes of love and no longer reacts to her diminished control.

Unhealthy soul ties will return if you do not step out from under the control of a controlling person. A lady became extremely unhappy working for her manager who became increasingly abusive and controlling until she decided to leave and start her own Real Estate business. She struggled until, realizing that her former boss still had a negative influence over her, she prayed, and in so doing, she cut off the controlling spirit that existed between them. We met her a few months later and she shared excitedly how her business flourished after breaking the soul tie.

How to break free from an unhealthy soul tie

Praise God the Bible tells us how to be set free. It says in Isaiah 58:6b (NLT):

Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.

So let’s break and remove those chains of unhealthy soul ties and set you free.

Ask the Holy Spirit to prompt you regarding the people or things He wants you to break from. Then Press play for audio and pray with Bill or read on praying aloud.

Lord Jesus, please forgive me for forming ungodly and unhealthy relationships.
Forgive me for having sex outside marriage, I acknowledge it as sin. I cut myself free and renounce the covenant of the “one flesh” unions and break the mental images that have kept me connected to them.
I give you all my guilt and shame and in exchange receive your forgiveness and acceptance.
Where I have been a victim of control, I choose to forgive and release them. I step out from under their control and influence and release those who I have controlled.
I draw back to myself every part which has been wrongfully tied in bondage to him/her in my mind, emotions and will and ask you to cleanse me and restore my soul.
In Jesus’ Name, I break and sever all unhealthy soul ties and the assignment of all evil spirits attempting to keep me in bondage and command all unclean and controlling spirits to leave now.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Praise God for the blood of Jesus that cleanses us from all sin and sets us free.

In the next session we’ll learn what it means when it says, “Jesus was bruised for our iniquities” and how to apply the work of the cross and be set free.
