Session Five

If you want to fly, you need to break free from the stuff that weighs you down – your shame

Free from shame – Session five

How do I stop being so hard on myself? How do I break free from my low self-esteem – shame?

This the fifth and a continuation of the last session, where Bill and Wilma Watson have been showing you how to break free from inner shame and not be so hard on yourself!

In the last session, you saw that the first step to freedom from the bondage of inner shame was to recognise your need and come out of hiding. The second step was to have a change of mind and heart.

This now brings us to the third step to freedom from inner shame and that is the need to renounce the lies of the enemy and declare the truth of God’s Word.

Let’s begin with a Bible verse that we mentioned in the previous session. John 8:44:
He (the devil) has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Every bondage begins with a lie

The story of the prodigal son illustrates it beautifully.

The prodigal son’s elder brother was just as much in bondage as his brother, as he believed lies. The Bible tells us that he was angry when he saw the way his father was celebrating his brother’s return.

Let’s look at one of the lies he told his father. Luke 15:29 (ESV):

Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat that I might celebrate with my friends.

When I hear that word “never” I get nervous. Let’s see why it was a lie for him to say, “You never gave me a young goat”. Luke 15:12 (ESV) tells us:

And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them.

Being the older son he would have received two-thirds of the property and stock, including goats, and the younger son one-third. Can you see the lie? In verse 29 he claimed to have received nothing!

When the prodigal son returned home in shame, his father ran and embraced him in love.

The father placed the best robe on his son
Symbolising that we have been given the robe of righteousness in exchange for our shame.

The father provided sandals for his feet
Understanding that only sons wore sandals, slaves didn’t wear sandals.

Symbolising the authority that our Father God has given us to rule and reign in life – rule over our shameful thoughts, attitudes and actions.

This is God’s promise to you and me. Romans 5:17 says (CEB):

If death ruled because of one person’s failure, those who receive the multiplied grace and the gift of righteousness will even more certainly rule in life through the one person Jesus Christ.

The Bible also says in Luke 10:19 (NLT):

I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy.

Satan deceived Adam and Eve and brought shame to the whole human race. Jesus won the victory at the cross, and put the shame back on Satan. Don’t you LOVE it! The curse has been broken!

Listen to what the Bible says in Colossians 2:15 (ESV):

He (Jesus) disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in Him.

Jesus not only won the victory but has given us the authority in life to rule over the enemy and reject his deceptions and temptations.

James 4:7 (ESV) tells us to:

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

When you totally surrender to God, and when you give him your all, you can then exercise your God-given authority and resist the devil.

So how do you resist the devil? Satan hates the truth because he is the father of lies.

Freedom comes when you renounce the lie and decree or declare the truth of God’s Word.

You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32.

Elizabeth A Nixon, in her book Decrees Inspired by the Psalms, writes: “Decrees, based on scriptural truths do two things: renew the mind and create a heavenly atmosphere as decrees cause us to come into agreement with God’s will and His kingdom.”

In Hebrew, decree means: “to divide, cut in two, to cut off, to destroy, separate or exclude”. When you decree biblical truth aloud, you cut off and destroy the lies of the enemy – that which has fed your shame-bound mind.

Satan whispers in your ear and announces a lie, you then renounce the lie and decree the truth.

We are now going to step through a series of common lies that the enemy can have us believe about God. Renounce the lie if it applies to you and then declare the truth of God’s Word. I have proved that speaking out God’s truth overcomes confusion and/or negative thoughts in your mind.

Lies of the enemy about God that need renouncing

You will find that you will have a closer relationship with God when you renounce the lies that you believe about God.

PRESS play and watch this short video on “Author of good’ before we do that.

If I commit my way to the Lord; trust in Him, He will act. Psalm 37:5 (ESV) Personalized.

Another lie of the enemy: God is distant and unapproachable.

Decree the truth. I have direct access to You, Father God, and You hear and answer all my concerns and cries to You.

God made peace with me, and now He lets me stand in His presence…holy and faultless and innocent.
Colossians 1:22 (CEV) Personalized.

Here is another lie:
God doesn’t care about you.

God is faithful to His Word. So renounce this lie by declaring the truth. I will cast all my anxieties on You, Jesus, for You care about me and rush to my side and and rescue me in times of trouble. (Psalm 50:15)

I can give all my worries and cares to God, for He cares about me.
1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) Personalized.

Throughout our teaching we have sought to show you how much God loves you. So please renounce and declare the truth whenever this lie comes up: God doesn’t love you, if he did he wouldn’t have put you in this situation.

The truth is: I am loved, Father, with the same love as You love Your Son and nothing will ever separate me from Your love.

As we look at the lies the enemy that he wants us to believe, it’s my prayer that, as you declare and take hold of God’s Word, you will change your perspective about God’s goodness and love for you.

Lies of the enemy about yourself that need renouncing

Bill Johnson of Bethel, Redding says: “We are to reject any thought that God does not have about us.”

The first lie that you can believe about yourself is that: You have to earn God’s love and acceptance. It’s a lie because the Bible assures us that we can’t earn God’s love and approval.

Declare with me. Father God, I am grateful beyond measure for Your grace and mercy, for I am completely accepted and loved by You no matter what I do.

He saved me, not because of anything I had done to gain his approval. Instead, because of His mercy He saved me.
Titus 3:5 (GWT) Personalized.

Another lie that the enemy whispers in your ear when faced with a challenge is: Who are you? You can’t do this.

I had a lady come to me for prayer and she shared that she heard this lie every time she had to face a new challenge. This went on for most of her life! It’s a lie because the Bible assures you that you are not alone. Christ’s power enables you to face every challenge.

Reject this lie by declaring the truth of God’s Word. I have the same power within me that raised Christ from the dead (Romans 8:11) therefore…

I can do everything through Christ, for He gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 (NLT).

It’s a lie that says you are no one special because the Bible assures you that you are special.

You are God’s unique precious child. Let’s declare how special you are: You God, the maker of the Universe, have selected me as Your very own. I know this to be true for Your Word says:

… [in His love] He chose me in Christ [actually selected me for Himself as His own].
Ephesians 1:4a (Amp) Personalized.

Another lie that the enemy whispers in your ear when faced with a challenge is: You are not good enough to be used by God.

Demolish this accusation by declaring: Father God, in Your love and grace, through Your Son, Jesus, I’ve been made righteous before You to be used for Your glory.

God has made me holy in his eyes, without a single fault– I stand before Him covered with His love.
Ephesians 1:4b (TLB). Personalized.

Another lie of the enemy is: Your sin or addiction is not such a big deal.

Satan wants to keep you in bondage with this lie. So renounce it and declare the truth.

God wants me to be holy and to stay away from sexual sins. He wants me to learn to control my own body in a way that is holy and honorable. Not to use my body for sexual sin like the people who do not know God. God has called me to be holy and does not want me to live in sin.
1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 (NCV) Personalised.

Lies of the enemy about others that need renouncing

This is a lie that affects yourself and others that needs renouncing: You can’t receive prayer or help as it is a sign of weakness.

The truth is: God has ordained that I relate to other believers in such a way that we can help each other fight the fight of faith successfully, day in and day out until the end. (Hebrews 3:12-14)

Share each other’s troubles and problems, and so obey our Lord’s command.
Galatians 6:2 (TLB).

Here is another major lie of the enemy: Your identity hinges on what others think about you.

Reject this lie as you now have a new identity and declare the truth. I am overwhelmed by how rich Your love is for me Father, for You say:

What marvellous love the Father has extended to me! I’ve been called a child of God!
1 John 3:1 (MSG) Personalized.

Inner shame causes us to be self-focused. So another lie that the enemy whispers in our ear when faced with a challenge is: You have to look after yourself first.

God is faithful to His Word. So declare the truth from His Word now: I will love myself (Mark 12:21), take good care to be strengthened with power in my inner being (Ephesians 3:16) and put Father God first in all things.

God will give me what I need if I give him first place in my life and live as he wants me to.

A lie that the enemy uses to keep us disconnected, suggesting that: You don’t need to connect with others for they’ll control you and/or won’t agree with you.

This deceptive lie is allowed to take root because of pride!

I’ve proved that you’ll see people differently when you put off the cloak of shame and replace it with the love of God.

You don’t have to allow your spirit to be controlled or manipulated by a controlling person. But you do have to show them God’s love and not take an offense, because you now understand that their core issue is inner shame and they need to be set free, like you.
Matthew 6:33 (TLB).

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.
1 Peter 4:8 (NLT).

Uncovering shame, for some of you has been very confronting, bringing up memories of the past that have formed your negative emotions, wrong beliefs and destructive patterns.

So how do we deal with these unhealthy, traumatized cellular memories in our subconscious mind?

You read what King David prayed earlier, but it is worth repeating here:

You desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part [of my heart] You will make me know wisdom.
Psalm 51:6 (Amp).

It is interesting to note that the Hebrew meaning for ‘innermost being’ is ‘covered area within’, and ‘innermost thoughts’ – that sounds like our subconscious doesn’t it?

Ask Father God to uncover in your subconscious mind any lie that you have believed from past hurts. Then renounce it, declare the truth and ask God to replace your unhealthy cellular memory with a healthy one. It will be life-changing.

There was a business man who came for prayer who was struggling financially. It was revealed that his father put him down regularly, telling him, “You’ll never succeed, you’ll never amount to anything.”

When the lie was uncovered from the cellular memories, renounced, and the truth decreed, within an hour he had a financial breakthrough. We have seen this happen many times!

Removing the veil and cloak of shame is the first step to freedom. Later we’ll show you how to be set free from offences, generational shame, soul ties and how to heal a broken or wounded heart. So keep going!

This is God’s promise to each of us in 2 Corinthians 3:15b & 16 (Amp):

A veil lies upon their minds and hearts. But whenever a person turns [in repentance] to the Lord, the veil is taken away.

It is time to lift off and throw away from our hearts and minds, that deceptive veil and cloak of shame.

Jesus, in His love, was shamed and rejected and took your sorrows and pains (Isaiah 53:4) upon Himself for you to be made whole.

Press play for audio and pray aloud with me from the heart or read on praying aloud from the heart.

Thank you, Father God, for showing me how much you love me and for exchanging my shame for your righteousness.
I want to worship you with my whole heart. I want to give myself totally to you, holding nothing back. So please root out, destroy and overthrow every area in my heart where Jesus is not Lord.
Please forgive me for my pride, arrogance and self-righteousness. Help me to walk in humility; to not try to make a good impression on others and consider others before myself.
Forgive me, Lord Jesus, for my fear of not getting it right and fear of rejection. Forgive me for believing the enemy’s lies and for doubting you and your Word.
Please forgive me, Father, for thinking and speaking negatively about myself and I release and forgive those who have spoken negative words over me.
Forgive me for my rebellion and for sowing discord, twisting words, arguing, judging and criticizing others. In the name of Jesus, I close the door I have opened to the powers of darkness, to rejection, chaos, control, confusion and strife.
I also ask you to forgive me for being self-centered, for my ungodly reactions and for not loving you, myself and others as I should.
Thank you, Jesus, that your Blood cleanses and totally removes all wrong beliefs, negative feeling and destructive patterns that are encoded as cellular memories in my conscience and subconscious. May your blood, Jesus, speak now on my behalf and silence the voice of the accuser of the brethren.
I renounce and put off the deceptive veil and cloak of shame. In Jesus’ name, I command anger, pride, fear, self-rejection, self-condemnation, self-righteousness, unbelief, aggression, an unloving spirit and every addiction to leave.
Thank you, Father that I don’t have to earn your love and acceptance, and for setting me free. I declare today that I am free from the cycle of shame and the enemy’s lies.
Holy Spirit, fill me and help me to reject any thought that is different to what you think of me. Give me a love for the Bible and empower me to live my life pleasing to you.
In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen
You have cast off the deceptive cloak of shame and now you have to daily put on the Lord Jesus Christ, who is truth. We’ll show you how to do that in the last session.

Personally, I thank Jesus that He took my shame upon Himself and I can be free from inner shame. What a difference it has made in my life.

In session eight as you’ll learn how shame can be passed down through the generations and how to be cut free from it, so don’t miss it!

In the next session we’ll seek to help you unpack another piece of baggage – unforgiveness.
